The Lantern Grin on the Top Step

Published · Updated

A little carved pumpkin waits at the top of a tall staircase, its warm grin shining against the dark plum carpet. The view begins close to a heavy wooden newel post and follows the handrail upward. Turned spindles, worn timber and patterned carpet borders give the long climb a rich sense of age. The small lantern becomes a bright destination within a much larger interior.

Along the right wall, a broad shadow in a brimmed hat stretches across the damask paper and raised lower panels. Its owner stays out of sight. An amber lamp lights the lower hallway, while the sash window above reveals bare branches against a blue night sky. Two framed silhouette portraits add another pair of quiet shapes beside the landing.

At the edge of the hall, a shallow bowl of wrapped sweets catches a little warm light. The decoration is restrained: one pumpkin, a few portraits and the house itself. Plum, brown and muted mauve keep the scene intimate, with cold window light separating the upper steps from the amber entrance below.
