Pumpkins Above the Broken Orangery
Published · Updated
Large pumpkins hang close to the viewer beneath the exposed ribs of a ruined orangery. Their orange skins and thick stems fill the upper part of the photograph, while thin vines follow the ironwork toward the open sky. Far below, an elderly gardener sits on the steps of a dry circular fountain. Several orderly towers of terracotta pots stand beside her, making a small sheltered centre within the abandoned room.
Tall arched windows trace the curved stone wall. The frames remain, but the roof has opened completely to the weather. Faded trees in wooden tubs line the edges of the tiled floor, where fallen leaves collect in the joints. Loose panes lean against the wall, and weeds soften the broken fountain basin. The view from above makes each layer easy to follow, from the heavy fruit to the quiet figure at ground level.
Soft daylight draws together rusted iron, dull orange pumpkins and pale worn stone. The gardener’s blue clothing supplies a small cool accent among the autumn colours. The unusual hanging harvest gives the empty conservatory a seasonal purpose without disguising its age.
