Purple sand dollars rest beneath the tide

Published · Updated

Purple sand dollars rest across a shallow tidal bed, their dark flattened bodies partly settled into the pale sand. Fine living spines make a soft fringe around each edge, while delicate petal-like grooves remain visible on the upper surfaces. Several discs lie flat and others lean at modest angles, revealing their thin profiles. They vary in size and spacing instead of forming a neat collection. Grains cling to the nearer animals, and bright bands of sunlight travel across the sand and their muted plum-colored surfaces.

A long blade of eelgrass arcs through the upper part of the view, adding one loose line above the repeated rounded forms. Small shell fragments and coarse grains provide a sense of scale without introducing a human hand. The clear water becomes cooler and softer toward the background, where the bed continues beyond the sharpest animals. In the foreground, shadows settle beside the sand ripples and under the tilted discs. The photograph stays close enough to show texture while retaining the surrounding habitat, presenting a living coastal community within its own quiet patch of water.
