Red cape canopy above the courtyard stairs

Published · Updated

A red cape canopy transforms a quiet courtyard into a theatrical outdoor room. Its enormous collar curves high against the blue sky, while broad openings interrupt the sweeping fabric below. Three brass buttons run down a thickened edge, making the garment shape recognizable at a glance. The cloth holds deep folds and visible seams that give the structure a tactile, physical presence.

Slender supporting poles rise from substantial bases beside the courtyard stairs. Crosspieces and attached edges explain how the canopy stays open above the space. Warm lights catch the red weave from beneath, creating areas of orange glow and darker scarlet. The fabric is large enough to fill most of the view without hiding the sky completely.

Below, wide stone steps climb toward a simple wall and planted edge. Curved seating follows the lower court, where small concealed lights trace the stonework. The empty arrangement leaves the contrast of materials clear: soft textured cloth overhead and heavy dark paving beneath. Its scale suggests an ambitious public installation while the visible supports, fixtures and seams keep the unusual design grounded.
