Rooftop water tanks rise above winter windows
Published · Updated
Rooftop water tanks rise at different heights above a dense winter neighborhood, their snow capped cones catching the last pale light. The closest cylinder reveals narrow wooden staves, dark horizontal hoops and a pipe running down its side. Cross-braced steel legs keep the supports visible beneath it, while smaller tanks repeat the same practical construction farther into the city. Brick parapets and roof access houses fill the spaces between them. The elevated viewpoint turns normally overlooked equipment into the main architecture of the scene.
Warm city windows glow below the cold blue roofs, with a few lamps visible behind the nearest panes. Snow lies along parapet tops, flat roof surfaces and the small covers of vents. A single distant plume rises through the buildings, adding a slight movement to an otherwise still view. Beyond the older roofs, taller blocks recede into soft blue haze beneath a thin peach strip of sky. No person stands on a roof or at a window. The photograph draws its atmosphere from repeated useful forms, their weathered materials and the ordinary signs of inhabited buildings on a cold evening.
