A taiko drum fills the snowy evening
Published · Updated
A taiko drum fills the foreground as its player raises one of his wooden drumsticks for the next beat. The broad wooden shell has a deep red-brown shine, with pale hide stretched over the top and dark studs following its edge. A simple headband and patterned charcoal jacket frame the performer’s concentrated face.
Gentle falling snow makes the nighttime air visible around him. Amber light touches the drum and one side of his face, while cooler tones settle over the distant audience. His wide stance and the sturdy wooden cradle give the performance a strong physical foundation. The sticks, hands and drumhead create a clear rhythm within the still photograph. Beyond the stage, bundled spectators and a timber shelter suggest a shared winter evening built around sound and movement.
