Sanderlings hurry ahead of the incoming wave
Published · Updated
Sanderlings hurry across wet sand beside the thin white edge of an incoming wave. Three birds lead the group in the foreground, with four more trailing in a loose diagonal. Their small bodies tip into different strides, and each pair of dark legs meets its own reflection. The pale bellies stand out against the cooler sand while buff-gray wing patterns add fine detail.
The shorebird flock stays close to the water without losing its individual spacing. Short dark bills point in slightly different directions as the birds follow the shoreline. A gentle curve of foam runs alongside them, repeating the group's movement through the frame. Small ripples break the reflections farther out.
Beyond the birds, successive waves lead toward low dunes and a dark line of coastal trees. Gray cloud fills the upper sky with only a little pale warmth near the horizon. The low viewpoint gives these small animals a strong presence while preserving the beach's open scale. Their quick, purposeful motion supplies the life in an otherwise quiet coastal scene.
