Storm light crosses the coastal dune ridges

Published · Updated

Storm light opens across the coastal dune ridges as a break appears in the heavy clouds. The nearest crest runs diagonally through the photograph, with one slope glowing gold and the other holding a cooler blue-gray shadow. Wind-blown sand lifts from the ridge in a fine low veil. Its softness contrasts with the sharply patterned ripples across the sheltered foreground, where tiny grains catch individual points of light.

Beyond the first dune, repeated sandy rises and dark strips of vegetation lead toward the coast. White surf follows the broad curve of the shoreline, and the sea grows deeper blue as it extends away from the land. A distant headland lies beneath the brightest part of the sky, tying the glowing sand to the opening in the cloud bank.

The view gives equal attention to small surface detail and the immense weather above it. Heavy gray clouds occupy the upper frame, while the warm central band of sunlight makes the dunes appear briefly illuminated from within. No footprints or structures interrupt the landscape. Sand, wind, water and changing light supply all of its visible movement.
