A Shelter beneath Porcelain Rosettes
Published · Updated
Blue and white plates form broad rosettes across the ceiling of this sheltered garden walk. Smaller dishes and closely fitted ceramic fragments fill the space between them, carrying the cobalt pattern down the rounded pillars. Their different floral designs reward a closer look, while the repeated circles make a clear rhythm across the whole vault.
A plain stone bench follows the curve of the wall. Its smooth, pale surface gives the eye somewhere to rest beneath the detailed mosaic, and a folded indigo blanket adds a soft edge in the foreground. Worn flagstones lead toward the next arch, their damp patches reflecting the brighter garden outside.
Red maple branches reach across the open side above layers of green ferns. Daylight touches the outer pillars and fades into the sitting recesses, making the shelter feel cool and enclosed without losing its connection to the garden.
