The Skier in the Silent Village
Published · Updated
A skier stands alone beside the village fountain, her skis balanced over one shoulder. Every chalet around her glows with warm windows and balcony lanterns. Outdoor tables are laid with bread, plates and fondue pots, and steam still rises from the nearest meal. The square feels ready for an evening gathering, but no other person appears among the buildings or streets.
From the chalet rooftop, the view reaches beyond carved wooden balconies to a valley of scattered lights and immense snowy peaks. Rose dusk touches the highest ridges while the lower mountains settle into blue. Pumpkins glow on the steps, adding small circles of orange to the timber and stone. The skier’s cream jacket provides a quiet centre within the broad setting. Rough roof tiles in the foreground establish the high viewpoint, and the prepared table below makes the absence of its diners immediate. Wool, worn wood, dry cobbles and soft steam give the scene familiar textures, allowing the village’s silence to become its most unusual detail.
