Something Rising Over the Pumpkin Patch
Published · Updated
Beyond the far hedgerow, a giant orange balloon rises into the night with the bright face of a carved pumpkin. Its stitched panels remain visible around the glowing eyes and broad mouth, while a golden burner lights the narrow opening above the basket. The balloon sits well beyond the field, allowing its immense scale to read against the small trees along the horizon. Cool moonlight and warm orange light meet across the rolling ground.
In the foreground, two children have very different reactions to the sight. A girl in a red coat stands facing the balloon with her blonde braids down her back. Beside her, a boy in a striped jumper has tipped backward across a straw bale, his arms and legs relaxed in comic surprise. Pumpkins gather around the bale and continue in long uneven rows into the distance. Their near ridges, dry stems and tangled vines give the field a familiar texture. Above the far glow, a bright moon and scattered stars keep the setting broad and quiet around the unexpected arrival.
