When the Midway Lights Went Out

Published · Updated

The carnival has fallen quiet, leaving its painted horses above a boardwalk darkened by rain. Their carved manes, worn saddles and raised forelegs line the edge of a large circular platform. Above them, the deep scalloped canopy carries faded ornament into the night. The ride bulbs are unlit, while two white lamps draw the eye toward a closed gate at the far end of the midway.

A small traveller in a cream suit moves between shuttered booths. Nearby, a seated lantern seller and several warm lights add a quiet human detail beneath the much larger structures. A Ferris wheel stands in silhouette behind a string of pumpkin faces. Thin red and green lights along the booths break into uneven reflections across the wet boards.

The view stays close to the ground, bringing plank seams, scattered sawdust and the curved carousel steps into the foreground. The deep vertical composition follows the empty passage between the rides, with the horses forming a strong frame on the right. The result is an autumn night scene full of physical detail and a gentle sense of unease.
