Spiral stair shadows cross the planted court

Published · Updated

A spiral stair descends into a planted court, its dark iron treads turning around a substantial central post. The elevated viewpoint makes the curved handrail, upright balusters and wedge-shaped steps easy to follow. Fine openings in the metal let sunlight pass through, casting patterned shadows onto the pale flagstones below. The stair and its shadow create two related curves across the same enclosed space.

A potted citrus tree stands beside the lower landing, its small orange fruit bright against glossy leaves. Ferns fill the narrow bed along the curved stone wall, softening the edge of the court without blocking the steps. The pot, iron base and paving joints all remain visible, keeping the planting and architecture grounded in a practical arrangement.

Light reaches different parts of the stair at different angles, catching raised details while leaving the undersides dark. On the ground, the shadows stretch into a broad fan crossed by finer leaf shapes. The photograph brings structure and planting into a single overhead pattern, with the rough stone surface providing a quiet backdrop for both the metalwork and the moving sun.
