Steamroller Printing Reveals a Giant Moth

Published · Updated

Steamroller printing reaches its revealing moment as two printmakers lift a giant moth image from the printing block. The bending paper forms a broad curve between their hands, giving the flat artwork a temporary sculptural shape. Black and ochre details spread across the cream sheet, while the compact roller behind them connects the result to the scale of the process.

An elevated oblique view leaves room for the block, the paper and the surrounding courtyard. Aprons, ink trays and drying prints establish a working event, with the people concentrating on the same careful lift. The cobbles offer a rough counterpoint to the broad paper surface. The photograph gives both the graphic image and the physical effort of revealing it a place in the composition.
