A Stone Face Among Carved Mushrooms

Published · Updated

A tall pale sculpture rises from a round pedestal beneath copper-coloured trees. One side holds the quiet outline of a face with a closed eye, while the other opens into branching mushroom stems and deeply carved caps. Empty spaces between the forms let the misty garden show through, making the solid stone appear unexpectedly light.

Rough mineral grain continues across the cheek, eyelid and mushrooms. Small chips, dark rain marks and patches of moss collect along the carved surfaces, and fine grooves radiate beneath the broad caps. The sculpture’s weathered texture keeps its human features clearly part of the same material as the stems around them.

A narrow gravel path curves behind the pedestal toward an empty wooden bench. Wet leaves cover the foreground and catch small highlights from the overcast sky. Dark evergreen shrubs sit below the warm canopy, with distant trunks softened by mist. The whole carving remains visible from its broad base to the tallest mushroom, giving the unusual combination of face, void and botanical form a strong presence within the quiet woodland.
