The Garden of Smiling Stone Spheres
Published · Updated
Four large limestone spheres rest among the rounded green shrubs of a quiet garden. Their friendly expressions are cut directly into the stone: narrow arcs for closed eyes, small angular noses and broad shallow grooves for smiles. The carving stays simple, allowing the material to remain the strongest detail. Chisel marks, small pits and patches of pale lichen continue across the faces and around the rest of each sphere, making every sculpture read as one solid weathered object.
The nearest sphere sits on a low circular base beside a curving gravel path. Three others appear farther into the planting, their gray surfaces contrasting with the fine leaves of the clipped hedges. Taller topiary and mature trees create a sheltered background, while soft morning sunlight passes through the canopy and reveals the rough edges of the carved lines. Mossy stones and dark gravel add texture near the foreground. The unoccupied garden offers a clear view of the playful objects and the careful planting that gathers around them.
