Sunken Garden Courtyard with Fern Stairs
Published · Updated
A sunken garden courtyard descends through several tiers of stone arches. Narrow stairs connect the open galleries, and dark iron railings follow the landings. Ferns and trailing plants grow from the damp masonry, with a round pool reflecting the sky at the bottom of the enclosure.
The view looks diagonally downward from a shaded upper landing. A weathered stone balustrade and round finial anchor the foreground, while sunlight reaches the opposite columns and leaves. Trees rise above the open rim. The repeated arches create a layered architectural rhythm without hiding the small planted spaces between them.
