A dining hall carved from snow has branch-covered vaults, wood-topped ice tables, small candles and an alcove overlooking snowy pines.

Supper under Snow-Carved Branches

Published · Updated

Branch patterns follow the curves of this snow-built dining hall, spreading from the low walls across its connected vaults. A sheltered alcove holds a small table, while the main room opens toward snowy pines at dusk. The carving belongs to the room’s shape, making the overhead surfaces as interesting as the view outside.

Dark wooden tabletops rest on clear blocks of ice filled with tiny bubbles and cloudy seams. Wool-covered benches soften the edges of the snow seats. Simple plates, folded napkins and small candles prepare the space for supper without hiding its unusual construction. The nearest table leads the eye through the room toward the open doorway.

Cool blue light reveals the granular snow and the deeper shadows in the relief. Candlelight stays close to each tabletop, catching the glasses and a few ice edges.
