The Airship at the Fairground
Published · Updated
A vast silver airship hangs above the fairground, its ribbed fabric skin secured to a tall lattice mast. Lights along the gangway lead a line of passengers toward the open hatch. There, a tall steward in white waits behind a pale smiling mask. Partway up the steps, a man in a camel coat has stopped and turned, looking back toward the fence instead of following the others inside.
In the foreground, a woman in a red coat and beret holds up an open brass compass. Its pale dial catches the light, while the needle is blurred at its centre. The small object creates a second point of attention beneath the enormous craft. Beyond the boarding line, a Ferris wheel and illuminated timber booths keep the fair running under a violet sky. Pumpkins and hay lie along the wire barrier. Wool, tarnished brass and taut fabric give this Halloween departure a tangible setting. The photograph suits a strange-travel theme, a seasonal wallpaper or a portrait print with a story unfolding at several distances.
