The Dark Liner in the Hand Mirror

Published · Updated

An oval hand mirror interrupts the busy harbour scene with a different version of the ship. Within its dark wooden frame, the liner appears rusted and unlit, with empty portholes and a weathered bow. Beyond the glass, the real quay faces a bright ivory hull, warm deck lights and an open boarding door. The contrast remains concentrated in the small mirror held just behind the iron barrier.

At the gangway, a man in a grey overcoat and dark hat turns back toward the woman holding it. Other passengers continue up the steps, carrying the movement away from his pause. Steamer trunks wait on trolleys, and musicians gather with their brass instruments farther along the quay. Small carved pumpkins rest near the dock edges.

Floodlights throw long shadows over the stone beneath a violet evening sky. Rivets and portholes give the towering hull a clear scale, while the nearby hand and mirror remain sharply defined. The ordinary bustle of departure surrounds a quiet warning that only the foreground glass seems to reveal.
