The Astronomer’s Tweed Under the Telescope

Published · Updated

A brown tweed suit lies empty on the wooden floor beneath a great brass telescope. The jacket and waistcoat retain their familiar shape, but the sleeves and trousers are hollow. Folded round spectacles rest across the chest. Fine pale dust gathers in the floorboard seams and along the edge of the clothing.

A sepia photograph leans nearby, showing a young astronomer beside a telescope. Behind it, the instrument’s long tube crosses the room above a heavy black mounting. A wooden observing chair stands beneath the eyepiece, and large circular star charts line the curved wall. The contrast between the enormous equipment and the small abandoned objects gives the room its quiet tension.

Violet evening light enters through the open dome slit and a doorway at the far side. A woman has paused there in silhouette, her coat dark against the sky. On a desk, a green-shaded lamp illuminates a cup and a small pumpkin. Wool, old wood and aged metal carry the scene, with the portrait and spectacles suggesting the person who should still be present.
