The Carousel on the Linoleum
Published · Updated
A little carousel has become the most surprising object in this quiet kitchen. Its pale painted canopy, narrow gold poles and tiny horses catch a ring of bright bulbs close to the floor. The woman crouching beside it still holds her iron, as though an ordinary evening has stopped halfway through a familiar task. Her cardigan and blue dress belong to the warm, modest room around her.
The low viewpoint makes the toy feel remarkable without losing the scale of the kitchen. Green and cream floor squares stretch beneath the ironing board, while an enamel stove and a crowded windowsill rise behind the woman. A glass oil lamp gives the scene its amber warmth. Beyond it, rain beads against a dark window, and a small carved pumpkin glows against the night. Worn paint, soft cloth and marked linoleum keep every part of the setting tactile. The tall composition lets the eye travel from the bright miniature horses to the startled expression above them.
