The Conductor at the End of the Train

Published · Updated

A narrow corridor stretches straight ahead through the sleeping train. Closed walnut doors repeat along one side, while dark windows and a continuous brass handrail line the other. Overhead lights mark the distance in a diminishing row. Outside, the countryside passes as low blurred shapes and small points of light, leaving the carriage unusually quiet and enclosed.

At the far end, a conductor in a white jacket stands beside a partly opened door. One hand remains near its edge while the other beckons toward the warm light beyond. A small carved pumpkin sits by his shoes. The centred viewpoint makes every door frame, ceiling seam and rail lead toward the invitation, with the conductor kept small inside the long space. Fine wood grain, worn brass and the subdued floor give the scene an ordinary physical weight. Its Halloween mystery rests on the final doorway and the suggestion that the end of the train may lead somewhere unexpected.
