Pale Moths in the Harbour Chip Shop
Published · Updated
Pale moths drift around a warm pendant lamp in a narrow harbour chip shop. Some wings are sharply lit, while others blur softly as they cross the light. The little cloud hangs above a curved counter with a broad white tile edge, checker trim and a row of worn wooden stools. Its quiet movement makes the familiar room feel unexpectedly strange.
Farther back, a cook lifts a white cap beneath another lamp. A customer in a mustard yellow coat sits facing the window, small against the dark harbour outside. Plain paper parcels and salt shakers remain lined up on the counter, and the warm glow from the frying area carries through the room. Ribbed glass and dark timber frame the open kitchen.
Sleet streaks the tall windows. Beyond the glass, fishing boats rest beside the quay with amber lights reflected in the cold water. The contrast between the sheltered shop and the blue storm gives the scene its October atmosphere.
