The Coral Palace Garden

Published · Updated

A coral-colored palace rises above a steep garden, its round towers topped with ribbed terracotta domes. Cream stone tracery runs beneath the eaves and around the tall windows, bringing fine detail to the broad warm walls. Two levels of open arcades connect the towers. Their repeating pointed arches create deep pockets of shade, while the sun catches the slender columns and carved balustrades.

The garden approaches the building through a sequence of broad stone stairs and planted terraces. Large agave leaves, rounded shrubs, palms and trailing greenery give each level a distinct texture. Old urns mark the turns in the route, and wet paving reflects small patches of the clearing sky. A blue sea and rugged headland remain visible to the left, placing the elaborate architecture within a much wider landscape.
