The Diva’s Gown across the Chaise
Published · Updated
A crimson velvet gown lies across a worn gold chaise, its skirt spilling in heavy folds onto the rug. A small standing collar and gathered waist give the empty garment a distinct shape. Pale face powder has settled along its folds, and one dark jewelled earring rests beside the hem. A faded portrait tucked into the dressing mirror shows a woman wearing a similar gown, linking the quiet room to an earlier performance.
The mirror’s round bulbs are dark. Instead, a green-shaded lamp lights the powder tin, brush and small bottles on the dressing table. A carved pumpkin sits near a vase of dark dahlias, while costumes hang beside the tall window. Outside, the last dusk lies over a dense roofscape. In the mirror, a woman waits as a doorway silhouette with a tape measure around her neck. The room’s ordinary details make the still life intimate: velvet rubbed by use, a scattered puff of powder, and a dress awaiting an absent performer.
