The Pale Champion in the Billiard Room

Published · Updated

Three covered billiard tables lead the eye through a tall oak-panelled hall toward a fourth table left ready for play. Pale linen sheets fall in heavy folds over the nearest rails, their quiet shapes repeating across the room. Farther away, a broad green lamp hangs low above bright baize. A small triangle of coloured balls waits at the centre.

Two men stand at opposite sides of the distant table with their cues. One wears a white shirt and dark braces; the older player wears an ivory suit. Their small scale lets the room remain the principal subject. A fox mask rests on a nearby side table, a modest trace of the evening celebration.

Above the match, a long wooden gallery runs beneath tall portraits and carved architectural details. Cue racks, patterned rugs and scattered chairs give the hall the feeling of a place that has gradually emptied. A fire burns at the far end, with small lamps making warm pools along the walls. The subdued light and dust-sheet forms turn an ordinary late game into a hushed Halloween scene.
