The Garden Canopy with a Stepped Sky Opening

Published · Updated

A broad concrete canopy shelters this small garden court, but an irregular rounded opening leaves its centre open to the sky. Several recessed steps follow the edge of the hole, forming nested contours through the thickness of the roof. Their pale rims catch the light while the surrounding underside remains shaded. Parallel board marks, small surface pits and rain stains keep the concrete visibly textured. Through the opening, a leafy tree reaches into a patch of clear blue sky.

Ferns and low shrubs fill the ground around the court's edges, with moss covering a boulder beside the path. A plain angled bench rests against the left wall. Sunlight through the roof opening creates a bright area on the paving, broken by the tree's fine shadows. The remaining stones hold damp reflections in the cooler shade. The empty space feels enclosed without losing its connection to the garden above, and the stepped opening turns the simple act of looking upward into the main feature of the architecture.
