The Great Sandstone Gorge Bridge
Published · Updated
An immense sandstone bridge crosses a deep gorge between two rows of whitewashed houses. Tall rectangular piers rise from the rock below, carrying one great central arch and two smaller openings near the roadway. The cut stone has a more regular texture than the surrounding cliffs, making the structure easy to distinguish while keeping its warm color connected to the landscape.
Far below, a narrow river threads between dark rocks and dense green shrubs. A stepped footpath zigzags down the left wall of the gorge, revealing the extraordinary height of the crossing. Above, a break in heavy clouds sends warm light onto the bridge and the clay roofs along the rim. The foreground parapet is dark and wet, with small patches of pale lichen. This photograph suits collections of monumental engineering, hill town architecture and dramatic natural light. The vertical view keeps the bridge, river and cliff edges in one continuous composition. Free reuse includes commercial projects, and a copy-ready credit link is available on this page.
