The Guard Among the Specimen Drawers

Published · Updated

A small guard sits on the marble steps of a ruined museum, his elbows resting on his knees. Neat stacks of wooden specimen drawers surround him, their dark fronts and brass pulls forming little islands of order among the rubble. The view looks down from a broken balcony, making his quiet figure seem smaller still beneath the enormous whale overhead.

The skeleton hangs from rusted chains attached to the surviving roof structure. Its pale skull, curved ribs and long spine stretch across the upper hall. Beyond it, open sky replaces much of the roof. Stone arches rise in repeated layers, with ivy spilling over balustrades and plaster dust covering the floor. A mammoth display remains in a shadowed corner.

Shattered cases, fallen columns and curled leaves fill the spaces between the rescued drawers. Grey daylight settles evenly over bone, marble and old mahogany, revealing their different worn surfaces. The guard has stopped carrying things for a moment, leaving the stillness of the damaged hall to surround his careful, unfinished work.
