The Ice Swan in the Backyard
Published · Updated
A towering swan of clear ice rises from a rough stepped base in a suburban garden. Its curved neck and small lowered head catch the fading light, while carved feather shapes spread across the great wing. Bubbles, cloudy chips and tool marks interrupt the transparent surface, giving the sculpture a worked, physical texture. Loose flakes glitter briefly as they fall toward the frosty grass.
The sculptor stands with his back to the camera in a canvas apron and gloves, concentrating on the wing. Farther across the lawn, a girl makes a small turning step in a lilac knitted dress and open cream coat. Her long hair swings sideways, and her hands remain low as she watches the drifting fragments.
Warm bulbs run along the wooden fence behind them. A pale house, bare branches and scattered autumn leaves place the ice work within an ordinary backyard. Blue evening light settles into the grass and the spaces between the tools. This photograph is free to reuse for personal and commercial projects.
