The Statue That Followed Her

Published · Updated

Low lamps draw a warm path between clipped hedges and pale marble figures. Fallen leaves lie across the gravel, and pumpkins rest in stone urns beside the avenue. Beyond the last statues, a fountain and a few shallow steps fade into the night. A small moon hangs above the bare branches, giving the formal garden a quiet sense of depth after closing.

An attendant walks down the path with keys at her side, her burgundy scarf a dark accent against a charcoal coat. She looks back toward a nearby statue of a young musician. The carved head is turned in her direction while the lyre and draped tunic remain still. Weathering, mineral marks and shallow carving continue across the face, hands and clothing, keeping the figure unmistakably stone. Moss gathers around the heavy pedestal at the edge of the path. The scene uses a subtle exchange of glances to unsettle an otherwise orderly garden, balancing autumn warmth with the pale stillness of marble.
