The Iron Lace Reading Hall

Published · Updated

Dark green iron arches climb above this immense reading room, their pierced circles and floral shapes forming a delicate framework beneath the pale vaulted ceiling. Long wooden tables stretch toward the far windows, each set with small green lamps and a few closed books. Tall shelves line both levels of the room, while narrow galleries carry the same intricate metalwork along the walls. The high windows reveal golden autumn trees, and afternoon sunshine falls across the parquet in broad, angled strips.

The room feels especially spacious because the slender columns leave long views between the tables, shelves and windows. Warm wood, deep green metal and cream plaster give the interior a restrained palette, with the changing foliage bringing brightness from outside. A polished stair rail enters the lower corner and provides a sense of arrival above the quiet rows of chairs. The photograph offers an architectural study of repetition, filtered light and the inviting warmth of a room built around books.
