Circular library with three levels of oak bookshelves, curved reading desks, brass lamps and a large round glass skylight.

The Ochre Library Rotunda

Published · Updated

Curving shelves wrap around this remarkable library, rising through three warm wooden levels beneath a pale sculpted drum. The books form narrow bands of muted colour, held within a regular pattern of dark columns and delicate gallery rails. Above them, the ivory plaster has a repeated shallow scallop texture that catches light from a ring of windows. A large round skylight crowns the room, revealing the silhouettes of wintry trees beyond its radial glazing bars.

At floor level, curved reading desks echo the shape of the architecture. Brass lamps cast small pools of amber light across their polished surfaces, while dark leather chairs and closed books suggest a quiet place to settle. A circular book cabinet with a vase of pale branches stands at the centre. The darker herringbone floor balances the bright upper volume, giving the room both height and warmth.
