The Last Candy Bargain after Halloween

Published · Updated

A candy bargain continues after the Halloween party has ended. A father holds one gold-wrapped sweet while his older daughter offers two purple ones in her open palm. Her persuasive expression meets his amused hesitation. Tucked beneath his other arm, the younger girl quietly reaches into the pile for another gold sweet, making her own move during the negotiation.

Halloween sweets spread across a deep blue rug between paper bags and crumpled streamers. The younger girl's pale ghost dress contrasts with her sister's dark star-covered cape. Dad's green knitted shirt and checked trousers fit the relaxed floor gathering. Their hands each have a different task, while their close positions show the ease of a familiar family game.

Folded paper moths frame the fireplace behind them. A warm lamp stands beside the mustard sofa, and tall bay windows hold the blue of evening. A wooden cupboard, patterned cushions and glasses left on the foreground table give the room depth. The decorations are elaborate, but the small contest over a piece of chocolate keeps the scene personal.
