A Pumpkin Manicure after the Halloween Party
Published · Updated
A pumpkin manicure gives this Halloween evening one more small ceremony. A father sits on the patterned rug against a velvet sofa while his older daughter carefully paints his orange fingernails. She kneels beside a little tray with the polish bottle, concentrating on the brush. His younger daughter sits across his lap in a soft bat costume and looks up toward his amused face.
The girls have different roles in the moment. One is absorbed in the careful task; the other shares a quiet glance with Dad. His open hand rests near a patterned cushion, keeping the bright polish away from the fabric. A plum dress, dark cape and ordinary cream shirt give the family familiar, tactile clothing.
Paper lanterns and black bats hang above the tall bay window. Warm light from a pleated lamp reaches the sofa, faces and scattered party things together. Bookshelves, floral wallpaper and a knitted throw fill the room with collected detail. Fallen streamers and discarded masks remain on the floor, while the doorway frames the family inside the larger scene.
