A boy in a denim jacket looks up at hanging bats and moss inside a handmade cardboard castle corridor lit by pumpkins.

The Homemade Haunted Hallway

Published · Updated

A boy pauses beneath a ceiling crowded with hanging bats, loose cobwebs and trailing moss. His face turns upward as he follows the decorations along a narrow corridor. A grey hood rests over his denim jacket, and his ordinary clothes make the transformed hallway feel like a surprising discovery inside a familiar home. Warm pumpkins line a shelf beside him, their carved faces bright against the dim walls.

The castle stones are painted cardboard panels, with corrugated edges and small folds visible around the joins. Twisted branches surround an old mirror, reflecting fragments of hanging cloth and orange light. Overhead, black bats hang at different heights, their wings spread between the pale strands of moss. At the far end, long black ribbons cover a doorway washed with green light. A low haze gathers near the floor and softens the passage beyond. The view from behind the boy brings each handmade layer into the same small space: rough paper, fabric, branches, carved pumpkins and the wooden floor still visible underneath.
