The Moth on the Cable

Published · Updated

A man leans toward the rain-covered window of a mountain cable car, holding one gloved hand against the glass. Just outside, an enormous moth grips the steel cable. Its pale wings spread across the upper window, their fine veins and long tails catching the cold light. Two ember-colored eyes look directly into the warm cabin.

Lightning opens a brief white seam in the clouds beyond the insect. Far below, a narrow river runs between dark cliffs and wooded slopes. Rain beads gather on the pane and hang from the moth's wing edges. Its soft body, feathery antennae and dusty wing markings remain close enough to study, despite the vast drop behind it.

Inside, a lantern lights the wooden bench and the lower metal rail. A small pumpkin peeks from a weathered canvas rucksack. The man's navy jacket and knitted hat form a dark edge around the view. Warm amber and cold slate divide the scene at the glass, holding an impossible encounter within the familiar shelter of the cabin.
