The Mountain Village Where Everyone Left
Published · Updated
The festival table is still set, but the mountain square has fallen quiet. A partly cut pumpkin pie waits beside mugs and plates, while a fiddle rests against a chair draped with a checked blanket. Lanterns, pumpkins and dried leaves line the rough wooden table. Across the cobbles, a small fire burns in an iron brazier, its warm glow reaching only a little way into the cold night.
At the top of the church steps, one boy in a red coat looks down over the empty gathering place. No other people appear between the timber chalets. Their windows and balconies glow with lanterns, autumn garlands and carved pumpkins, while a dusting of snow traces roofs and stone walls. Beyond the church spire, dark mountains rise into snowy peaks beneath a full moon. The contrast between the welcoming decorations and the stillness gives the scene its gentle mystery.
