The Painted Mulberry Canopy Hall

Published · Updated

Painted tree trunks rise between the tall windows of this country-house hall and spread into a dense canopy across the vault. Green and golden leaves follow interlaced branches overhead, with small patches of pale blue showing through. The mural turns the upper room into the impression of a sheltered arbor, while its soft surface and visible painted details remain part of the architecture. Below, dark oak panelling frames the windows, doors and a pale stone fireplace at the far end.

Two long oak tables stand along the centre of the hall, accompanied by low green upholstered benches. Broad bowls of white flowers introduce real foliage beneath the painted leaves. Warm terracotta tiles cover the floor, their worn surfaces carrying soft reflections from the open garden door and high windows. Outside, clipped shrubs and stone urns sit on paving still bright after rain. Small wall lights add a gentle glow along the panelling. The photograph gives the painted canopy room to unfold, connecting a richly decorated interior with the fresh garden visible just beyond it.
