The Pumpkin Stampede Down the Hill
Published · Updated
Pumpkins pour from an open doorway and spill down the broad front steps of a painted timber house. Orange, white, green and striped shapes fill the route to the street, then bounce across fallen leaves in a rolling flood. Some remain sharp in mid-air while the closest carry a hint of motion. Their different sizes and ribbed surfaces give the jumble a lively, physical weight.
Three children laugh as they move out of the way. A boy climbs onto a low stone wall, a red-haired girl hops clear in a cream sweater and dark skirt over opaque tights, and a younger boy crouches beside a mailbox. Their hands, boots and shifting balance hold the moment of action against the steady lines of the houses.
Golden foliage hangs above the street. Pale clapboards, white window trim, autumn flowers and iron stair rails bring order to the busy scene. Bright afternoon light falls across the pumpkins and casts ordinary shadows beneath them. This photograph is free to reuse for personal and commercial projects.
