The Rocking Horse on the Hotel Landing

Published · Updated

A small dapple-grey rocking horse waits beneath an oval window at the top of a narrow hotel staircase. Moonlight picks out its painted head, worn saddle and curved wooden rockers. The toy seems paused at the edge of a movement, alone on the landing while the rest of the stairwell falls into deep green and red shadows. Below it, a long wool runner climbs between dark wooden treads, held in place by slender brass rods.

The curved banister draws the eye from the foreground toward the horse. On the flocked wall, a porter’s shadow raises a lamp, announcing an approaching figure who remains outside the photograph. A wall light glows lower down, warming the wood and the edge of the carpet. Folded linen rests on a ledge beside a tray and a single apple on a stick. These ordinary signs of hotel service make the unattended toy feel stranger. The tall composition holds the entire staircase together, from the quiet lower steps to the cold moon beyond the landing window.
