The Empty Halloween Promenade

Published · Updated

The promenade is bright with Halloween decorations, yet a single woman stands alone between the houses and the sea. Her long camel coat catches the warm light from the open doorways as she looks toward the empty buildings. Carved pumpkins crowd the steps and railings. Above them, strings of orange and purple bulbs cross between dark iron lamp posts, leading the eye toward a glowing carousel in the distance.

A tray of toffee apples waits on a counter in the foreground, while a bicycle leans against the sea railing. The painted hotel fronts rise closely together, their bay windows lit above wreaths and autumn leaves. Beyond the carousel, an illuminated pier stretches over calm water and scatters narrow gold reflections across the surface. Patches of faint mist soften the hillside behind the town. The broad paved walkway leaves room around the lone visitor, emphasizing the absence of the evening crowd. Each familiar detail remains ready for a celebration, from the empty benches to the warm doors and patiently shining lights.
