The Town on Halloween Night
Published · Updated
A boy and his younger sister walk hand in hand along a decorated town street. He wears a brown leather jacket over a striped shirt and smiles down at her. She looks up beneath a tall black witch hat, with long blonde hair falling over a purple cape. An orange pumpkin pail hangs from her free hand as they pass the warmly lit shopfronts.
Brick sidewalks, painted clapboard and autumn leaves give the street a familiar small-town texture. Carved pumpkins sit on the steps, and strings of orange lights run between the lamps. Families in costumes gather along both sides, leaving the middle of the road open. Their smaller figures carry the celebration into the distance without competing with the children in front.
At the far end, a white meeting-house steeple rises against the deep blue evening sky. Warm windows and lamps create repeating pools of light along the pavement. The photograph catches a gentle exchange between the siblings within the larger seasonal scene, combining the excitement of costumes and lanterns with the reassurance of walking together.
