The Stone Harp and Its Falling Water

Published · Updated

A dark stone fountain rises in a broad oval beneath the spreading fronds of tree ferns. Its two curved sides almost meet at the top, leaving a narrow split, while three straight crossbars hold the open shape together. Fine streams of water fall through the center into a rounded bowl. Water then spills over the bowl's edge and returns to the square basin below. Closely spaced ridges cover the stone, catching small highlights where the surface is wet.

The fountain stands in a secluded garden of mossy walls, broad leaves and low ferns. A short stair climbs out of the courtyard at the left, following a simple copper-colored rail. Uneven stepping stones cross the damp foreground, their dark surfaces reflecting small pieces of the bright canopy. Sunlight reaches through the fronds and illuminates the falling water, leaving the lower stone in cool shade. The photograph combines a strong carved outline with delicate moving threads. Its many green textures soften the fountain's geometry and give the whole space a calm, sheltered feeling.
