The Striped Stone Courtyard

Published · Updated

Broad bands of ivory and charcoal stone give this open courtyard a distinctive rhythm. Pointed arches repeat across the lower floor and around the upper windows, while slender iron balconies connect the rooms above. Trailing plants fall from pots along the parapet and soften the strong horizontal stripes. Morning light reaches the upper walls directly, then reflects into the shaded arcades below.

The paving combines black-and-white diamonds, broad borders and large pale panels around a low octagonal fountain. A handful of small tables and bentwood chairs sit at the edges, leaving the center open. Potted orange trees add glossy leaves and warm fruit to the restrained stone palette. A stair in the far corner makes the courtyard feel connected to the spaces above rather than isolated from them.
