The Tin Whistle by the Mill Pond
Published · Updated
A tin whistle lies in wet grass at the edge of a mill pond, its finger holes dark against the worn metal. Across the water, three children run toward the willows in warm bear, firebird and ghost costumes. Their inverted reflections linger beneath the bank, each slightly changed by the still water and small ripples. The separation between the moving figures and their reflected shapes gives the familiar pond a quiet, uncanny character.
At the right, a large wooden wheel turns beneath the low roof of a stone-and-timber mill. Its movement softens into a blur while a warm lamp picks out the steps, rough masonry and an older miller leaning on the rail. A cart of pumpkins and flour sacks waits nearby. Moonlight and willow branches spread across the water, with a thin layer of mist close to the far bank. The low viewpoint connects the small abandoned instrument to the wider scene. Damp grass, old wood and dark water keep the Halloween mystery rooted in an ordinary rural place.
