The Two Gates on the Misty Road
Published · Updated
Two gates meet at the end of a damp country road. The taller entrance has slender gilded bars, curling iron leaves and pale stone pillars topped with urns. Autumn flowers climb the masonry, and a lantern on each pillar casts amber light across the threshold. Beyond the ironwork, a straight garden avenue disappears into the early mist. The second entrance is quieter: an old timber gate beside a narrow track, with one lantern burning on its wooden post.
A boy in a brown coat and cap stands between the two routes with a hound beside him. Seen from behind, their small figures give the entrances scale without hiding the details. Fallen leaves lie across the wet gravel, while a dark tree canopy reaches over the right side of the road. Pale hills and upright trees soften into the distance beneath a faint peach dawn. The photograph brings together polished metal, rough wood and weathered stone in a still autumn scene. It is free to reuse, including commercially.
