The Velvet Lift and Walnut Lobby
Published · Updated
An open lift cabin forms a tiny furnished room within this spacious lakeside lobby. Honey coloured walnut panels surround a rust velvet bench, an old mirror and a small crystal chandelier. The shallow curved ceiling adds to the cabin's intimate scale. A bronze scissor gate folds beside the opening, beneath a tall frame filled with fine metal scrollwork.
Pale stone walls and dark green veined skirting give the surrounding lobby a restrained setting. A curved timber console stands to one side, while two green chairs and a small table occupy the space by an arched window. Beyond the glass, a grey lake and wooded hills recede into morning mist. The view from the shallow stair includes both the unusual lift and the airy room around it. Warm light inside the cabin contrasts gently with the cool daylight across the stone floor, making the photograph suited to collections of historic interiors, decorative joinery and unexpected architectural details.
