The Porcelain Jar Apothecary

Published · Updated

Enormous blue, yellow and sage leaves curl across the tiled floor of this apothecary room. The painted design continues from square to square, forming a broad decorative carpet beneath the dark walnut furniture. Slight differences in the glaze catch the light from the tall windows and the warm wall lamps. Cabinets rise between the windows, combining narrow open shelves of cream porcelain jars with wider glass-fronted sections. Each jar carries a small blue botanical pattern.

A long wooden display table stands in the centre, holding larger ceramic vessels and a brass balance with empty pans. At the far end, a dark double door is framed by pale carved scrollwork and a prominent shell, connecting the detailed joinery with the ornamental cream ceiling. Green plants on the windowsills echo the leaves painted underfoot. Outside, rain softens the garden view and supplies a cool contrast to the lamps. The photograph makes the floor the room's most surprising feature, while preserving the ordered shelves, warm timber and fine decorative details that give the interior its character.
